Education is a broad concept that refers to all the experiences in which students can learn something to develop and establish them in the society. Education could be formal and informal. Formal education consists of a systematic standard of instruction, teaching and training. This format is derived from many different disciplines of life, i.e., psychology, philosophy, biology, linguistics, sociology, etc. While informal education consists of the general etiquette, decorum, rules and codes of conduct in the society.

Informal education is what you get mostly and largely from your progenitors. Your initial lessons starts from home where you get to learn how to sit, stand, behave and speak in the society with elders, mates, friends and others. When you start learning certain decorum then comes the time to go for formal education which helps in refining your persona further with more useful and powerful knowledge. This formal education helps you achieve your ultimate goal in the society of being a successful man or a satisfied person (depending on your own aspirations). It also helps you be a better human being and a person with refined wisdom.

In contemporary scenario, no child should be without education, as it is almost impossible to survive without it. Now all the nations and states have made it mandatory to provide primary/ elementary education to all kids, unbiased of their caste, creed, race, status and nationality. Special kids who have some difficulty in reading and writing, like other normal kids, also have an absolute access to any normal school for learning things the way others do with a little more care and concern. Physical education in schools is becoming a popular discussion topic. Are children getting enough gym class time? Is the amount of physical activity directly correlated with their test scores? More and more studies are indicating that a good physical education is vital in growing healthier, smarter and more creative young people.

Now, we are beginning to see that the same brain growth occurs in physically active children. Kids who exercise show greater reasoning, critical thinking and memory skills.

Principals, coaches, teachers and parents alike are recognizing the necessity of keeping physical education in schools. No longer is it seen as a frivolous part of the day. Learning about exercise and how to exercise is promoting mentally and emotionally healthy children. My daughter almost got taken in a fake cheque moving scam advertised through Craigslist as a job posting for secret shopper of various online and offline stores. Fortunately we (parents) found out what she did before it was too late. How does it work?

We arrived home from work and at our door was a couriered envelope addressed to my daughter and addressed from a residence in Ithaca, NY, Min Park. In the envelope was a cashiers cheque drawn on the Bank of Nova Scotia for $3,900. payable in cash to the bearer (my daughter). Who made out the cheque? The Ottawa-Carleton Education Network. The bank is legit and from what we can tell, so is the Ottawa-Carleton Education Network which is a non-profit organization.

We immediately questioned this as my daughter had no idea why she would receive this cheque. She, needless to say, was very excited to go cash the cheque but she also knew this was not only mysterious it was wrong until we confirmed the legitimacy of this cheque. Cooler heads prevailed and we began to google every piece of information we had and yet we found nothing to suggest it may be nothing more than some strange clerical error. We decided to call Ottawa-Carleton the next day once we confirmed they were not open in the evening. We did call the next day but not before we found out what was going on.

My daughter received an email on her mobile phone shortly after we finished our exhaustive online research that ended with no real answers one way or the other. The email was from the company that supposedly hired her to be a secret shopper. News to her. The email instructed her by stating we confirmed you signed receipt of the envelope. Not true. It was sitting on our door step when we arrived home. The email went on to instruct her to deposit the cheque in her bank account. Then she was to keep her total fees and expenses of $520. yet further instructed her to send them a cheque to the Philippines of $3,400. WE NOW KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON…SHE WAS BEING SCAMMED!

The scam; the bank clears the cheque and gives her the cash within days. The bank actually finds out the cheque is fake later and comes back to her to repay and reserves the right to charge her with fraud. Wait! It gets worse. We called he police and we were told that this is a very common scam and because we did not cash the cheque we are not victimized and even if we did cash the cheque, all they could do is file a report. Reason? Because of the difficulty of tracking the paper trail to the con artists behind this who are international and in many cases in countries with no police and inter-governmental co-operation. “It is just not worth the effort for anything under $10,000.”, stated the police officer. This is the genius of the scam. The con artists know this crime will never be pursued. The police told me that all we can do is what we are doing and that is to educate the public. First, we were told, is report it to Craigslist. Before we could, the job posting my daughter responded to had already been removed. As I’m sure it is always done for everyone of these scam ads. The police also advise us to contact phonebusters.com. We will and we also contacted Ottawa-Carleton who said ‘Oh no, not you too’. They have been receiving calls on this for the last few days. We were the only one, as of yet, who did not cash the cheque and they asked us if we could send it to them for their own investigation. We will send them the cheque as it holds no value to anyone other than them.

I’m glad I have my blog and ezine to post our story and hope you pass it along to as many people as possible. Through the power of our online social network we can educate many people to watch for this scam that preys on honest people who only want ‘extra income’ or employment.

Single gender class rooms are on the rise in Ottawa and research proves there are real benefits to this environment for our girls. Studies prove over and over again that girls in single-sex schools perform better than girls in co-ed schools, regardless of socio-economic and ability levels.

There are only two Ottawa private schools that offer an all girls learning environment. One is Joan of Arc Academy, located in Ottawa’s west end. The other, Elmwood is located in Rockcliff Park.

Joan of Arc Academy, once known as La Maison Jeanne d’Arc was founded in 1954 in Ottawa’s Westboro community. Since 2002, the school has been located in Ottawa’s west end, which has allowed them to expand their program and increase their student population.

Elmwood has been educating girls since 1915. Their tuition is approximately 18,000.

Joan of Arc’s tuition is approximately $12,000 a year.

Both of these Ottawa private schools are dedicated to providing girls with an enriched curriculum, to challenge their students everyday and to encourage their creativity, while achieving a solid mastery of essential knowledge.

If you are considering one of these all-girls’ schools make sure to visit each school a number of times. Once the application process in underway your daughter will be invited to visit the school and to participate in the classroom for a day to see how she fits in with the rest of the class. Remember to apply early as both schools have very limited class sizes, often with a waiting list.

Inquiries into furthering my educational aspirations were made to various colleges within my immediate environmental area. Several of the schools contacted required placement exams that I did not challenge, as I am adept and very capable of dealing with college examinations. The thing that got to me was the disparaging remarks from some college recruiters regarding their standards for education as opposed to another college. One of the schools that I’ve attended is a two-year degree school while the other is as well. They hold real estate in the same zip code and competed for students in the same local. They both educated local students as well as out of state and students from other countries and nations.

One school considered itself superior to the other by reason of accreditation. The school that was described as inferior did not have middle states accreditation. The school was described as below standard by the other. The so-called superior school is lead and operated by a non-HBCU affiliation while the other happened to be lead and operated by an African American staff. The self-described superior school has made plans, designs, and did bid for the take-over of the African American school. Albeit, the self-described superior school admits that it does not and will not accept credentials from the so-called inferior school. I have attended both of these institutions and received very good instruction from its teachers as well. While the lessons learned were an invaluable source of information, the education that I received from personal academic research (self-taught) has enhanced my knowledge base. Money was not a factor in my personal research, study, and/or practicum. I would add, the knowledge and information that was derived from the HBCU School proved to be equally rewarding as the other if not better!

Personally, I would say that I received more educational value at the HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) as opposed to the other collegiate institution. Albeit, they both required money.

When students visit college campuses they are encouraged to become a student at that particular school. The tour guides’ show all of the amenities and accolades that are offered in order to get you enrolled…and to gain your tuition monies. But what about the quality of education offered by the particular schools? The majority of the colleges will often quote their accreditation as compared to another school of choice. What has accreditation to do with a good and valuable quality education? Money! And the ability to make money! Education does not and should not require money!

Education is important. It is necessary to learn new things, such as the latest trends or some of the things from way back thousands of years ago. Unofficially boasting the second highest UFO sightings behind Roswell. Home to Canada’s largest nuclear bunker! On again, off again, Carp is once again host to the annual Ottawa Air Show! Annual destination for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast. A location for a Tom Clancy movie shoot staring Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman.

Intrigued? Well you should be! The Historic Village of Carp has nothing to do with the fish by the same name. The seemingly sleepy rural community sits on the northwestern fringe of the city of Ottawa – just a bit ‘up the valley’ as they say in the (Ottawa) Valley. This small village, although predominantly a farming community, has some of Canada’s defined history running through its veins.

The [debatable] secret building of the four-storey nuclear fallout Diefenbunker, was a massive Federal Government construction project completed in 1961. Now part of Canadian Cold War history, a tour through this concert and steel underground fortress will stimulate your senses with the intrigue of espionage, spies and covert operations. Come prepared to walk up and down stairs.

Carp, in the 1960s and 70s, was noted for the unusual number of UFO sightings. This is not surprising, since the this military bunker was a military commissioned, secure defense communications installation. Department of National Defense (DND) personnel would cycle through a tour-of-duty for up to three months inside this bunker facility.

For about 40 glorious seconds in the Tom Clancy suspense movie “The Sum of all Fears”, the Diefenbunker was Mt. Weather, Virginia, USA. The inclined tunnel leading to the huge steel-vault-like doors and locations inside the complex were used as a backdrop for the movie, scripted around a nuclear attack on America.

Nice being picked by Hollywood, but the real enticement to visit this rural Ottawa Village is its local character. Rooted in agriculture, adds that ‘country fair’ feel when in June, the Carp Airport hosts the Ottawa Air Show and again in August, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA Chapter 245 ) fly-in breakfast. Both of these Aviation spectacles boast aerial displays, vintage and modern airplanes and always a taste of aerial hot-doggin’. Although hosted on a smaller scale, rivals the big heart and excitement of the Abbotsford BC International Air Show.

It’s all morning fly-in action surrounding the Annual EAA Chapter 245 fly-in breakfast. Sometimes landing back-to-back the pilots, in their kit-built aircraft, circle, land and taxi to designated parking spots. Over 50 to 60 planes are flown in during this much anticipated event. Pilots eat a hearty breakfast, fuss over their aircraft, catch up on news from other pilots, and some then take off into the wild blue yonder. Others, like August Lehmann, veteran pilot of 49 years, flew in from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to attend the annual EAA Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast. Mr. Lehmann, who flew his custom made 2005 Cessna 230 H.P. Cyclone at an average speed of 130 mph, took the opportunity to visit with friends and relatives along his flight path to Carp, Ontario.

One plane that draws a lot of up-close attention is the prop-version replica kit of the Canadian Snowbird Team CT-114 Tutor jet, right down to the paint. One bi-plane had vintage enthusiasts crowding around for a closer look. Wow! Beautifully lacquered wood throughout the cockpit and on the wings. Lots of photo opportunities everywhere you turned. It was hard for shutterbugs to keep up.

It may start with the Carp Airport, but its charm doesn’t stop there. It has a few more unique long-standing attractions:

1) Home to Canada’s longest running drive-in Bingo as highlighted on the CBC Show ‘On The Road Again’ with Wayne Ronstad. Started in 1954 and still going strong!

2) Over 142 years of the Carp Fair, held during the last weekend in September!

3) Incredible sunsets and easy access to some of the best Snowmobiling and ATV trails in Canada!

Enough said! C’mon over! Chat with the locals. Bring your family and friends for a visit to one of Ottawa Valley’s gems.
