FAQ - frequently asked
questions
What makes the Ottawa Tutor Centre different from other tutoring
centres?
OTC is a locally owned and operated company, founded by a teacher,
who saw the need for such a Centre. Whether a student requires
remedial or enriched programs or simply wishes to keep "on top" of
his or her subject, OTC can provide the help needed. In addition to
teaching students from Ottawa schools, we cater to students, who
have recently moved here from other countries and who may be finding
the educational adjustments challenging.
What sort of tutors teaches at the Ottawa Tutor
Centre?
Our staff consists of fully qualified, certified teachers, most of
who teach in Ottawa schools. These teachers are highly dedicated
professionals with an excellent knowledge of their subject material.
Their goal is to help each student reach his or her full potential
and to achieve academic success.
Are assessments given to each student?
During the first session, tutors make personal assessments of their
students by determining the strengths and weaknesses each student
has in a particular subject. If, however, a more serious educational
problem is detected, OTC can recommend further testing by
educational psychologists. The staff at OTC does not provide
psycho-educational testing.
Why do students require a minimum of 4 lessons?
It requires at least 4 sessions to ensure that a student has grasped
a particular concept being taught. Fewer than 4 lessons are not
adequate time to solve any learning problems. Most students,
however, choose to remain at OTC for the remainder of the semester
or school year to maintain continuity and achieve success.
Do you keep in contact with parents and
teachers?
OTC provides report cards to parents every term (12 lessons) in
addition to talking to parents in person, by phone or by e-mail. In
many cases, our tutors will also contact the student's teacher if
necessary.
OTC offers both on- and off-site tutoring. What
are the advantages of both?
About 80% of our students come to our Centre for their lessons where
there are fewer distractions and where the Centre is set up with all
the educational materials required for learning. The rooms are
quiet, well lit and comfortable with the air of a "mini classroom",
which makes it more conducive to learning.
Off-site tutoring occurs when it is inconvenient
for a student to get to our Centre due to distance, lack of
transportation, time constraints or other personal reasons. Many
students learn better in their own surroundings; therefore, many of
our tutors go out of their way to accommodate them.
What is OTC's environment like?
OTC offers a warm, friendly atmosphere, which serves to enhance the
overall learning experience. It is spacious, clean and comfortable,
and for those students attending during the warm weather, OTC is
air-conditioned.
Are your tutors familiar with the "New
Curriculum"?
Yes, our teachers are familiar with the changes brought about by the
new curriculum. Most of our tutors teach full time in Ottawa schools
so are fully aware of what is happening in the educational arena.
Do you offer adult education?
Yes, OTC teaches students from age 6 upwards. Adults can request
lessons in English, French, university courses, SAT preparation or
other subjects and OTC will do our best to serve their needs.
